Castle Valley Fire Protection District
Castle Valley Fire Commission
AUGUST REGULAR MEETING
Thursday August 8, 2024 6:00 pm
Station 2 (behind Town building)
Attending: Mitch Stock, Bill Rau, Ron Drake, Greg Halliday, Jazmine Duncan; apologies from Bob Russell
Call to Order: 6:12
1. Public Comment:
Greg: Mike Wakley saved the day by responding to the lightning strike on a tree between Round Mountain and Porcupine Rim. He called in the fire; then another lightning strike on Porcupine Rim started another fire. The BLM send a helicopter to that second fire, but failed to notice the first. Mike used a Razor to get in as the ground was very rough. Power in the valley was out so Mike couldn't talk to anyone.
Ron will call Sheriff's office to ask if they can contact CV when power is out.
2. Approval of Minutes of June 2024 meeting
Postponed to next month
3. Administrative Issues
4. Chief's Report: Ron Drake
- No callouts during month
- All Utah equipment will stay in Utah during fire season
- There was confusion about the two recent fires, resulting in only one person on one of the fires.
- Checks generator every Saturday; still irregular in starting
- Fire danger sign changed from Extreme to Very High
- CPR class scheduled for August 20
- State grant is behind in getting funds; will notify applicants soon
- Training meetings have been short because of heat.
- Possible two new members from Castle Valley Academy; one had belonged to a fire department in Wyoming.
5. Treasure's Report: Bob Russell
postponed
6. Discussion and possible action on long term planning, fire dept. needs, priorities, vision and policies: development of standard operating guidelines, policies and procedures.
Mitch: Honeyman's new lot has a large well; he has offered fire department to use it. He'll have Danny look at the well to assess. It seems like a good opportunity for a backup water source.
Ron talked to Bob Lippman about getting an ATV for department. Subsequent discussion tended not to favor the proposal.
7. Closed Session (if necessary): personnel matters, awards; recognition program, etc.
8. Adjourn: motion by Bill, second by Mitch; approved. 7:20 pm
