Community Member Invitation
DIA is interested in creating a partnership with Comunidades Unidas to provide additional resources to DIA parents and Family.
Mayra Serrano from Comundades Unidas was invited to the meeting to inform the board about her agency's services. Mayra was born in Mexico and came to the United States as an undocumented immigrant at age 11. Mayra is passionate about community organizing and justice. She is the Executive Director at Comunidades Unidas since 2010. Comunidades Unidas is turning 25 years this year. Prior to Comunidades Unidas, she engaged in community organization, working with parents and schools to ensure parents' involvement in their children's education. Comunidades Unidas has 18 programs to serve the community.
Budget Report by Jeff Biesinger from Red Apple
Jeff was recently assigned to work with DIA. Red Apple has worked with DIA since 2009. Jeff is excited and ready to work with our school.
Jeff shared the budget with the board and the areas reviewed included the bottom line, which is above 3%, local revenues, State October count, forecast, expenses, benefits, professional and technical services. The budget is healthy overall.
Governor Cox - Email to Schools
Rich Stowell sent an email to all board members regarding this topic. Governor Cox's email to schools describes the new policy to remove cell phones from classrooms. DIA already has and enforces a policy regarding this issue and has a procedure in place.
Facilities (update)
Mequette Sorensen indicated she attended the town meetings where the school closures were discussed. She reported about potential school closures in Salt Lake City that include Riley elementary, which is about 1.2 miles away from DIA. The board discussed the need to draft a one-page letter to provide a description of DIA, our need for a new school, our passion for the population and our dual immersion program. The letter should include the struggles we face in areas such as maintenance, lack of grass and proper play areas. Mequette Sorensen will write a letter of interest and send it Rich Stowell and Angela Fanjul for review. The letter will be sent to the SLC superintendent. It was also recommended to reach out to city council members and invite then to visit DIA. The city council members to be invited are Alejandro Pua and Eva Lopez Chavez.

Policy Audit
The purpose of assigning board members several policies, is to ensure we have them in place to comply with the state. Some members have reviewed and or completed their assigned policies. Board members were reminded to work on their assignments and send Teri Salugh any questions they may have.
Board Candidates/Membership by Teri Slaugh
It was announced that Tereza Bagdasarova resigned her board membership and role as board vice-president. She resigned via email today. Rich Stowell, board president, also announced he is resigning his membership and position on the board by the end of this month. Board members thanked Rich for all the time he has served on the board and for all his valuable contributions. He will be missed and wish him the best.
Rich posted board candidate vacancies post through LinkedIn as job post/volunteered position and got a response. It will be important to see who responds and what knowledge and experience they can bring to the board. The board also discussed the need to encourage DIA parents' participation on the board and a process by which to mentor new members. The board will work on filling the President and Vice-president's vacancies as soon as possible.
