The ballot order for candidates is determined using a randomized alphabet created by the lieutenant governor after the candidate filing deadline and published on the official election website. Election officials apply this randomized list to candidates' surnames (and, if necessary, first and middle names) to establish the order in which names appear on the ballot. This process does not apply to races with only one candidate or judicial retention elections, and offices are listed on the ballot in a prescribed order by level of government.
Candidates' names will appear on the ballot using their legal first and last name, unless a properly filed request is submitted by the close of the declaration of candidacy period to use a middle name, nickname, or initials. Any requested name variation must meet legal requirements and be approved by the election officer, with denials subject to appeal. If candidates have the same or similar names, additional identifiers may be used to distinguish them on the ballot.
