PUBLIC NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
October 27, 2025, 4:30 PM
Description/Agenda
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Grand County Planning Commission will hold a Public Hearing at a Regular Meeting on Monday, October 27, 2025, at 4:30 p.m. or later. Hearing will be held in person at the County Commission Chambers, 125 E Center St., Moab, UT 84532, and virtually on Zoom. All interested parties should plan to attend in person or electronically. Instructions to participate via Zoom will be provided on the meeting agenda, which will be posted on the County's website at least 24 hours before the meeting.
The purpose of this hearing is to solicit public input on a proposed Zoning Text Amendment to Land Use Code Section 6.5.5(A)(4) Freestanding Signs in Non-Residential Zones to add a narrowly tailored exception for signs in the HC - Highway Commercial District that are within 350 feet of Interstate 70, allowing a maximum height of 65 feet above grade or 50 feet above the level of the adjoining highway, whichever is greater.
SUMMARY OF THE ORDINANCE
Plain English Summary:
Grand County has been asked to update its rules for how tall free-standing signs may be in the Highway Commercial (HC) zone near Interstate 70.
Previously, signs were limited to 24 feet in height.
Under the new ordinance, properties in the HC zone within 350 feet of I-70 can now have signs up to:
- 65 feet tall above ground, or
- 50 feet above the level of the adjacent highway, whichever is greater.
Each sign may have two faces, each up to 8 feet by 24 feet (192 square feet), joined back-to-back with no overlap.
This change helps businesses near I-70 become more visible to highway drivers, especially in areas where the land sits lower than the road. It supports local businesses while maintaining safety and visual standards.
A complete draft of the proposed ordinance is available in the Grand County Clerk's office, 125 East Center Street, Moab, Utah.
Notice was posted within the Grand County limits on this 17th day of October 2025 at the Grand County Courthouse, on the Utah Public Notice Website - www.utah.gov/pmn, and the County's website - www.grandcountyutah.net, and two public places within the County.
