Retirement Reception

A retirement reception was held at 6:00 p.m. at the Box Elder Middle School cafeteria for this year's retirees. 

Retirement Recognitions

Terry Jackson recognized the retirees with a gift certificate to Maddox and a School Bell and the Board congratulated them on their retirement.
 	
Tentative minutes of a Regular Meeting of the Board of Education, Box Elder County School District, held Wednesday evening May 10, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at the Box Elder Middle School Auditorium.

Those in attendance at the meeting included Board President Wade Hyde, Vice President Nini Anderson, Members Nancy Kennedy, Connie Archibald, Bryan Smith, and Karen Cronin arrived at 7:47, and student board member Sydnee Richards. Lynn Capener is recovering from surgery and unable to attend. Also present were Superintendent Ronald Tolman, Assistant Superintendents Darin Nielsen and Terry Jackson, Business Administrator Rod Cook, officers of the Box Elder Education Association, district employees, representatives of the press and interested citizens.    

President Hyde welcomed those in attendance and conducted the business of the meeting.  After the prayer, offered by Sydnee Richards, Nancy Kennedy led the audience in the pledge of allegiance.

Approval of Agenda

Nancy Kennedy made the motion to approve the agenda. Bryan Smith seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

Action Items

Approval of School Lunch Prices for 2017-18

It was recommended that school lunch prices be raised effective for the 2017-2018 school year.  The funds needed to meet the Paid Lunch Equity (PLE) requirement for SY 2017- 2018 be split between School Nutrition and the District general fund. School Nutrition will raise lunch prices to $1.90 for elementary and $2.00 for middle school. The high school price will not increase, to remain at $2.50. This modest increase will keep BESD in line with Logan/Cache/Tooele in pricing. 

Rod Cook, Business Administrator, asked for the Board approval to raise elementary and intermediate prices from $1.85 and middle schools from $1.90.

Connie Archibald made the motion to approve the recommended lunch increases for the 2017-18 school year. Nancy Kennedy seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

Approval of New Course Offering

Darin Nielsen, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, presented a new course for Board approval.

It was recommended that the Box Elder School District Board of Education approve USU FCSE 1140 Introduction to Sewing.
Nancy Kennedy made the motion to approve the recommended course. Nini Anderson seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

Approval of School Lands Trust Plans

It was recommended that the Box Elder School District Board of Education approve the School LAND Trust 17/18 Plans that have been submitted.

Connie Archibald made the motion to accept the School Land Trust Plans for the 2017-18 school year. Bryan Smith seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

Rod Cook, Business Administrator reviewed the monthly financial report with the Board.

Superintendent Tolman made the recommendations for the following policies.

Board Discussion Items

Board Goals Review

Superintendent Ron Tolman explained that the progress that was measurable on the goals is noted in red and will continue to be updated as more information becomes available.
Bryan Smith would like the administration to work with a Box Elder High PLC group on improving the process there, as the teachers had expressed some concerns about it. Terry Jackson and Darin Nielsen will follow up and report back to the Board.

Bryan Smith moved to accept the consent items.  Nancy Kennedy seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.
