Other information: November 2013 Safety Net Meeting Minutes Safety Net Meeting Minutes – SLC, UT - November 07, 2013 Attendance: Jenni Frey, Anne Wilde, Tonya Tewell, Tom Metcalf, Paul Murphy, Lloyd Pendleton, Brady McCombs, Iris Gomez, Bonnie Peters, Jen Oxborrow, Marva Sadler, Marie Gadda Via phone: Madonna from the Dove Center Jenni welcomed everyone and the minutes from November Safety Net Mtg. were approved. The information from the minutes was discussed by all. Questions were asked relating the the food rationing going on in Colorado City and Lloyd Pendleton discussed the possibility of starting a food bank in that area. Holding Out Help’s log cabin Open House was discussed and the success and crowd that attended and the benefit it will be to the community. Paul brought up that the Harker Farm is being sold and that the end of the courts involvement with the UEP trust. Marva from the organization of People Helping People then presented about the benefits of this organization and what it is all about. It is a non-profit organization that focuses on low income woman but anyone can benefit from this program. The focus is helping those in need develop job success. 60% of their clients are single moms that, have either been stay at home moms out of the workplace for a long time or single woman that need help, skills and opportunities to sustain themselves and those they are responsible for. They have been in SLC for 20 years and are also in Utah and Weber County. She made the statement that children that grow up in poverty continue to live in poverty and are much more likely to be involved in crime and substance abuse. To lift children out of poverty – there organization helps the mom. People Helping People has workshops to teach how the system of employment works. They teach how things are looked at from an employer’s point of view. They teach how to develop employment tools and strategies for job searches. There program includes mentors that are actual business owners that will help and mentor those in the program. They start at the beginning with what a person likes and likes to do and what they are good at and prepares them through mock interviews. Every client has their own personal mentor for 10 weeks for about 2 hours per week to help and coach them. PHP helps 600 woman per year and this number is growing. Their main emphasis is to teach employment skills and recruit employers. 95% of their graduates from this program are employed. 100% of those employed have gone off assistance, 68% have received raises, 40% have purchased their own cars, 40% have gone back to school. Jenn Oxborrow brought up the fact that there are only 138 schools with no social emotional counselor on staff for children. She told of the mobil crisis outreach teams that are available in every county in Utah that deal with suicide/mental health/domestic and sexual violence in youth and families. One doesn’t need insurance or benefits to use this service. In Salt Lake City the phone number is 587-3000. Iris brought up that the Nami Conference is the next week with Dr. Posner as the keynote. Tanya told of the grand opening of the log cabin community center opening in Colorado City. She and Anne told of the celebration and hope that this center can be a resource for all in that area and big plans are in store for an internet café, library of sorts and baseball field. The meeting was adjourned at 10:40am. And mention was made of next months meeting in Colorado City.
