4. Approval Annual Arts & Culture Advisory Board Committee Nominations
Mr. Castillo gave an overview to the Board of the nomination process, function of each committee, and duties of committee members.
The Nominating Committee is for a one-year commitment and works with Mr. Castillo, they review applications for the Board and help in the process with the interviews. Mr. Lewis thought it was a great experience.
Ms. Ithurralde gave an over of the Art Selection committee. This is a sub-committee of the Advisory Board that meets 7 times per year. Review artists and their works, nominate their artwork to be purchased for the Salt Lake County visual art collection. Goal is to look for art works that tell the story of Salt Lake County.
ZAP Tier I &Tier II. ZAP is the zoo, arts & parks program. These are two separate review Boards; and per their bylaws we always try to have one representative from the Arts & Culture Advisory Board. They review organizations applications for ZAP grants. Their main body of work is done from April - Sept, and they have 10 meetings scheduled this year. These members also receive tickets to events since it is the members responsibility to assess these organizations. The organizations are encouraged to offer tickets to board members, so you see their programs, making this a great opportunity. These are 3-year commitments, but we can make adjustments if necessary.
The agenda that was emailed to the Board showed the committees whose members term ended in 2024 that need to be filled.

5. Community Engagement 2024 Recap and 2025 Planning Discussion-
Ms. Niedfeldt presented a power point recapping the 2024 events. Community Engagement is a division wide initiative, going on about 4-years now. Team members are communication, marketing staff, and community activation staff. Below are a few of events Ms. Niedfeldt gave an overview.
She provided metrics to the Board, how many attendees and Artists/Art Groups. Through our Marketing/Communications we can track increased revenue, increased media stories, hits on our social media accounts, etc.
Art in Public Places Acquisitions Reception - this was well attended.
SL Beats: live local indie bands - pop up indie music concert on McCarthy Plaza.
SL Speaks: Our first SL speaks was Heart & Sol, live poetry event.
Westside CultureFest - this was our 2nd year, which was well attended.
SL Speaks: Slam Poetry Exhibition, this was our 2nd speaks.
Voces en Bloom - this brought in our Spanish language.
Lights on at Eccles - was a great success.
Arts in Public Places Visual Art Collection Public Tours - we held several public tours for a diverse range of the public.
Ms. Niedfeldt ended the presentation by asking the Board four questions, requesting their feedback/thoughts on how we can improve community engagements.
1) Did you attend any of our Division activation events during the 2024 season? If so, how was your experience?
2) Our current community engagement team focus areas are: support and capacity-building for cultural industry (research, analysis, professional development), reaching under-resourced audiences, and building new audiences and clients. Do you think these are the right priorities to focus on? What else would you add to this list?
3) What groups or individuals do you feel are currently underserved by the Division? In your opinion, how well is the Division doing at reaching these groups with our current activation events?
4) Are there any organizations you have existing relationships with that may be interested in participating in any of our Division activation events?
A discussion ensued, with thoughtful critic and comments from the board members, plus a question-and-answer period.
6. Language Access Service Overview -
Ms. Munk presented a slide presentation showing the utilization of this service in 2024. Program Overview:
Tools for A&C staff to communicate clearly with increasingly diverse patrons and clients.
Formally implemented in 2023. These tools allow us to communicate better with increasingly new diverse clients.
Interpretation - spoken language in real time and in person. For meetings, phone calls. Our art tix ticket sellers log several hours with this tool, and we used this service for an event. Ms. Munk described how this is a 3-way call, we initiate with the provider who translate to the patron/client.
Translation for written content and documents. Signs, rental information, website copy. Plain language. She showed a slide how this was used on the Voces en Bloom poster.
Right now, Spanish is the most requested language. We also have information in Russian and a couple of other languages.
Ms. Munk explained how this service is on our homepage and gave 2 examples: Rental information about Mid-Valley in Spanish, and Spanish language on our homepage for our Ushers.
A discussion ensued, with a question-and-answer period.
