4. Resident Review Presentation and Questions, Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation - Kary Billings (Executive Director)
Mr. Billings gave a brief history of the Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation, founded in 1976 by Paul Pollei. He shared a PowerPoint presentation with the Board. They received an advance ruling granting nonprofit status in May 1987 and full status in April 1990. He explained the organizational structure and how Bachuer relies on the support of volunteers to achieve its goals. The International competitions (bi-annual) have 40 - 60 families act as Host Homes. These host homes offer lodging, meals, rides, and moral support to the competitors.
They are committed to supporting piano excellence through the performance of classical piano literature together with commissioned works. Their mission is to bring world-class piano experiences to global and local communities through transformative opportunities including competitions, festivals, concerts, and educational programs. No other organization, except for the Olympics, offers a diverse cultural exchange, this event is held every other year. This bi-annual competition attracts numerous notable performers and musical connoisseurs from all over the world. Key Changes program: Tomorrow on Abravanel Hall plaza will be a mini concert, these will be done throughout the summer. Turn old piano into works of art also displayed on Abravanel Hall plaza.
The program impacts almost 20K children across Utah, by bringing world-class pianists to school settings, performing interactive concerts for students on Steinway grand pianos. Their goal is to reach out to more diverse communities of all economic and ethnicities. We give out vouchers to the students to attend with their parents.
An international concert series takes place at Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center from October 2024 to May 2025. The goal is to broaden support in ethnic communities as represented by the diversity of Bachauer laureates and performers.
June 22-24,2025 is the international piano festival. Young pianists are invited to receive one-on-one training from esteemed educators. These students then participate in a student recital. They want to continue this goal of partnering with Utah Music Teachers Association.
They have a diverse audience, music teachers, students, and lovers of classical solo piano music. Their outreach program is presented to a wide range of schools in Salt Lake City and the rest of the County. Title I funding helps them to reach out to ethnically, culturally, and economically diverse youth in our area. They are ADA compliant and offer free tickets to members of the Utah Council of the Blind.
Bachauer present 3 distinct competitions for pianist: ages 11-14, 14-18, and 19-32. The winning participants in the 19-32 group perform in cities as Hamburg, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, New York City, and Salt Lake City. Mr. Billings gave details of each competition.
Mr. Billings went over their three-year strategic plan mentioning a few goals. Connecting with young musicians: introducing student juries in their competitions. Outreach: Actively reach out to diverse communities and extend 'Piano Inspirato' program to more Title I schools. Online presence: Continue to update and refine their website, stream all events of the Artists Competition live in 2024. Partnership: Continue to collaborate with representatives from Utah and national universities and conservatories. Through these collaborations they aim to enrich the community. 50th Year Anniversary: in 2026 will honor legacy - historical documents, pictures, and stories for public display. Special anniversary concerts & galas.
A question-and-answer period followed.
5. Resident Review Presentation and Questions, Repertory Dance Theatre - Linda Smith (Executive Director) and Nicholas Cendese (Assoc. Director)
Ms. Smith and Mr. Cendese gave the Board a PowerPoint presentation. A video was shown to the Board that talks about their values. Repertory Dance Theatre (RDT) has been around for 58 years, founded in 1966. A trio of dancers served as artistic coordinators; this laid the groundwork for RDT's shared leadership model. They are dedicated to advancing the understanding of dance as a critical form of communication. She explained their 2024-2025 season.
They offer three auxiliary programs at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center:
Ring around the Rose - interactive adventures for children and families.
RDT's Link series - provides independent Salt Lake dance artists the opportunity to present concerts in partnership with RDT.
Dance center on Broadway - offers in-person dance classes for community dancers aged 16 and older. They offer different classes per week. Have summer workshops and do Saturday workshops for professional dancers.
RDT invest in their arts-in-education programs which are held in-person and virtually. This website serves as home for all past and newly developed online, arts learning content. It includes videos, performances, and downloadable learning content for K-12 grade learning. Bring professional dance to the community.
Ms. Smith went over different programs they have, and how they support diversity by establishing a multicultural advisory committee to advise their leadership.
She went over how they structured their ticket prices, so it doesn't create financial or cultural barriers for their audiences. They haven't raised ticket prices in years. This year they are offering a Tier system for ticket prices, following a national trend by other similar organizations.
Their 3-5-year strategic plan includes:
Engagement: addressing accessibility barriers, expanding their website 'dance to learn', and support and expand programs that serve underserved populations.
Financial security: ensuring financial health through budgeting practices coupled with oversight by staff and board, offer living wages to staff, and increase individual, foundational, corporate support to increase the size of their endowment.
Organizational Vitality: provide a safe working environment, continued training for all staff that supports team building and professional relationships between co-workers and the public.
Artistic Legacy: will celebrate their 60th anniversary in 2025-2026 season, memorializing their history making it accessible to students, teachers, artists, patrons and researchers. Effective July 1, 2024, will transition staff and administrators to new leadership roles.
RDT has started to partner with local charities and nonprofits whose mission, community-served, and/or values closely align with theirs. They appreciate the efforts made to keep Rose Wagner and other Arts & Culture venues affordable and cost efficient. RDT is apprehensive about the new sports and entertainment district, since it is a few blocks away from Rose Wagner, they feel all parties involved may not be considering the impact and effect it could have on Rose Wagner.
A question-and-answer period followed.
