Weber County Friends of the Fairgrounds Advisory Board Meeting Thursday, April 25th, 2024 Golden Spike Event Center Conference Room Members Present: Teddy Anderson, Tom Close, Brandon Miles, Terance Lavely, Jon Beesley, David Widdison, Susan Clontz Staff Present: Duncan Olsen, Gabby Spackman, Emily Scoville, Duane Kearsley, Ashton Wilson, Kim Salas, Marty Smith, Todd Farrario Excused Members: Tiffany Christiansen, Connie Robinson Welcome: Duncan Olsen opened the meeting and welcomed board members, the meeting came to order at 12:34 pm. Approval of Minutes: Approval of February meeting minutes did not take place at this meeting. Weber County Report & Welcome: As Commissioner Harvey was not present, Duncan skipped past this section of the meeting. Golden Spike Event Center Report: (Duncan Olsen) Duncan Olsen spoke about the work being done on the grounds recently to prepare for the Summer season. He mentioned the Economic Impact report, being generated by Visit Ogden, and went on to note that in February, Golden Spike Event Center showed close to One Million Dollars in Economic Impact money that impacted the County both directly and indirectly. Duncan noted that he will have more to report on the Economic Impact data in the coming months. Duncan highlighted upcoming events, including the May Mania Demolition Derby and events being hosted by the Weber School District. Weber County Fair Report: (Ashton Wilson) Ashton Wilson spoke about some of the attractions and entertainment that the community can expect at the fair this year, including Markus the Funny Man, who does stage shows and photo booth, a ventriloquist, hypnotist and the robot rangers. Ashton highlighted one recent change that is being communicated to the public, which is that Fair Tickets and RV reservations will go on sale this year on May 31, rather than mid-June as they have done in the past. She asked everyone to spread the word about this early sale date as RV reservations sell out very fast. She noted that she is working on fair sponsorships right now. Jon Beesley suggested that we add a 4 wheeler derby to the fair because it is very popular at the Plain City 4th of July celebration. Committee Discussion: (Duncan Olsen)) Tom Close began the discussion by highlighting the horse races which took place last Sunday and was the biggest in the history of this event, with $215,000 in sales and 12 races. Tom goes on to note that Wyoming downs provides great support for the event, contributing $120,000 just this year, due to the fact that the majority of the horses that race at their facility are from Utah. Some of that money is used for prizes, to attract new people to race. Tom thanked the staff for awesome job grooming the track and added that no horses fell. Brandon Miles let everyone know that Curtis Jeffries has moved positions and introduced everyone to his replacement, Terance Lavely. Marty Smith mentioned that there has been flooding at FT. Buenaventura, which is being addressed. Parks and Recreation is waiting for trails to dry out at North Fork so they can open that area to the public. Marty let everyone know that the Olympic group met again with the Ice Sheet and have decided to not utilize the Ice Sheet as an Olympic Venue due to space limitations. Instead they will be using the Salt Palace. Marty went on to discuss the renovation taking place at the Ogden Eccles Conference Center and the efforts of that team to stay open during construction. Todd Farrario talked about Geocaching and how it is being used as a tool to track the Economic Impact of difference facilities. He noted that with this tool they are able to track how many people come through our parks and venues, which helps with future funding. Discussion/Action Items: (Duncan Olsen) Teddy Anderson asked everyone for help finding someone to be the craft art superintendent for the Fair this year. Adjourn: Duncan thanks everyone for coming and adjourns. The meeting ended at 12:55pm.
