Welcome - Ms. Soul welcomed everyone; the meeting was called to order at 11:33am. 2. Review of Public Comments - No public comments. 3. Action Item: Approve March 28, 2024, meeting minutes. Ms. Shaw moved the motion to approve the minutes, Mr. Riches moved motion to second. Unanimously approved. 4. Civic Museum Program Outline and Selection Subcommittee - Kate Ithurralde Ms. Ithurralde presented the Board with a Civic Museum overview. Civic definition: way to describe people or things that have an official status in a town or city (civic leaders of SL County) Also, to describe the duties or feelings that people have because they belong to a particular community (a sense of civic pride) Civic museums are those that have a particular emphasis on the relation between a place and its people. This is achieved through embedding in a place while curating a new perspective on the way that place's story is told. They reveal the past so they can make sense of the present and shape the future. The SL County Civic Museum is an Art in Public Places project that provides welcoming spaces to exhibit unheard and often overlooked narratives of our community. Through community partnerships, it is committed to promoting the mission and programming of cultural and other nonprofit organizations. The Board was shown examples of potential partnerships. There are three public places for exhibition venues: Mid-Valley Performing Arts Center, SL County Government Center, and Eccles Theater. To be eligible for the Civic Museum, applicants must meet at least one of the programs criteria. These were given to the Board. Each partnering organization term is two years. A selection subcommittee of the SL County Arts & Cultural Advisory Board will be formed. This subcommittee will be composed of community members, County staff and at least one member of the SL County Arts & Cultural Advisory Board. The Subcommittee will review and evaluate the applications based on certain criteria: Alignment with Mission, Community Impact, and Feasibility. Dos and Don'ts were also presented to the Board. The Board was presented with the timeline process for applications. The Board needs to approve the proposed established subcommittee and elect an Advisory Board member to the committee. Director Lee Denver, community member Daphne William, community member Jorge Rojas, artist, and community member Todd Oberndorfer, community member ( ), representative from Advisory Board SL County Arts & Culture Advisory Board selected Mr. Jorge Rodriguez to be on the subcommittee. Action Item: Civic Museum Selection Subcommittee and Appoint Advisory Board Representative. Ms. Shaw moved motion to approve the Civic Museum Selection Subcommittee and Appoint Board Representative, Mr. Riches moved motion to second. Unanimously approved. 5. Resident Review Presentation and Questions, Ballet West -Michael Scolamerio (Executive Director) 6. Mr. Scolamerio gave a slide presentation; Ballet West is in its 60th season. They have grown into one of the nation's largest and most highly esteemed classical ballet companies. They are now the 9th largest company based on budget size and the Frederick Quinney Lawson Academy is among the five largest training academies in the country, based on student enrollment. They are financially strong with a healthy cash reserve and a strong working capital position. Totally self-reliant for operating cash and has not utilized a line of credit in more than three years. Their mission statement: Ballet West inspires and empowers a broad community locally and globally through presentation, training, and education in the art form of ballet. Ballet West has a five-program subscription series, consisting of 50+ performances, including the Nutcracker, with live music for most, if not all performances. Annual choreographic/new works festival at Rosse Wanger. Family Classics Ballet series narrated in English and Spanish. Community outreach serving 100K+ students and adults statewide. Two SL County locations of Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy. A few of their accomplishments include: 2 invitations to perform at The John F. Kennedy Center for the performing Arts. Invited to perform at the Arpino Festival at Chicago's Auditorium and their Nutcracker was designated Utah's First Living Historic Landmark by the Utah Legislature. A breakdown of their workforce is as follows: American Guild of Musical Artists (dancers), International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employes (production staff) and American Federation of Musicians (orchestra). For the next 60 years their goals are to Increase size of company from 38 to 42 dancers and increase their guaranteed employment to 40 weeks. Expand touring revenue and national and international visibility. Increase their enrollment at FQL Ballet West Academy by 20% over 5 years. Reduce employee turnover. Increase earned and unearned income by an average of 10% over 5 years. Focus on diversifying employee base, audience, and board. Invest in FQL Ballet West Academy, open a campus in West Valley City, and increase endowment to $25 million. They have outreach and community programs that serve more than 100K individuals. Programs include Ballet West for Children, and Adaptive dance/movement mentor. They work with Arts & Culture on different issues, want to collaborate to solve problems. Also has collaborations with the arts community. Subcontracting painting drops, inviting other dance companies to performances at no charge, tessitura training and general support form Systems Manager at USUO, to name a few. A question-and-answer period ensued, all questions asked were answered. 7. Resident Review Presentation and Questions, Utah Symphony/Utah Opera - Steven Brosvik, (President and CEO) Mr. Brosvik gave an overview of Utah Symphony/Utah Opera with his slide presentation. He gave a brief history of both Utah Symphony & Utah Opera since they started out as individual companies. He advised how they are staying relevant to a changing patron population. Utah Symphony / Utah Opera (USUO) serves Salt Lake County residents of all ages and musical preferences and, to attract new audiences, offers contemporary works along with those from the traditional repertoire, as well as family performances, films-in-concert, and programs representing a variety of styles such as jazz, Broadway classics, and Latin music. They seek to enchant and entertain our community while providing opportunities for residents to connect with each other through the shared experience of extraordinary live music. Utah Symphony's status as one of 17 full-time professional orchestras in the United States enables a year-round schedule with two concerts most weeks at Maurice Abravanel Hall from September through May for a total of around 70 events annually. Utah Symphony musicians reach students in every Salt Lake County school district annually, Salt Lake County residents comprise the largest geographic group at the orchestra's Deer Valley Music Festival in Park City. Utah Symphony's 2024-25 Masterworks series exemplifies the success thy have achieved in introducing new repertoire and nearly two-thirds of the 2024-25 Masterworks programming feature women or people of color as guest soloists, conductors, or composers. Utah Opera, with its 20 opera performances (five each of four operas) each season at the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre, takes its own approach to relevancy and appeal for diverse audiences. Their plan is to incorporate works from the traditional canon, new or less frequently performed operas or musicals, and a family-friendly opera appropriate to introducing children to the art form. They have five Resident Artists-a soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, baritone, and pianist- they are selected through national auditions. They present Utah Opera's education & community engagement events in schools and public venues across the state. The Board was also emailed some information on Utah Symphony/Utah Opera including their attendance reports for the past three seasons and their education programs. Explained their Outreach and audience development programs. Organizational structure and their 3-5-year strategic plan, including more effective collaborations with other arts organizations. The three areas they suggest implementing operational improvements: 1) Ability to schedule and confirm dates of upcoming season further in advance. 2) A collaborative approach between Arts & Culture and USUO to continue to enhance patron experience. 3) Improve accuracy of ticket scanning process, record actual attendance. A question-and-answer period followed. 8. ZAP Reauthorization Education & Awareness - Matthew Castillo There was no time for a discussion, Mr. Castillo will email information to the Board and include this topic in the next scheduled meeting. 9. Art Event Discussion- No time for discussion. 10. Adjourn- Ms. Shaw adjourned meeting at 1:06pm Mission Support arts and culture in Salt Lake County with premiere Spaces, Places, and Services.
