NOTICE OF CITIZEN COMMENT PERIOD
The St. George Police Department recently received notification of available funding from the United States Justice Department under the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) FY 2023 Local Solicitation. The JAG program provides local agencies with the flexibility to prioritize and place justice funds where needed the most. The St. George Police Department is eligible to receive $30,781.
Jag funds may be used to provide additional personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, training, technical assistance, and information systems for criminal justice. The St. George Police Department will be utilizing the grant funds for three projects. The first project the department will utilize funds for is the Defensive Tactics Training Mat Project. These mats will be added to our training facility for defensive tactics, de-escalation, and use of force training. These mats will help to prevent officer injuries when conducting dynamic use of force training scenarios.
The second project is the SWAT Operator Ballistic Vest Project. The City of St. George continues to grow and as a result so do the demands on the department's special response units. To meet the increased demands associated with critical incidents, the department SWAT team is increasing the number of operators. The increased numbers help with staffing response levels, on-call rotations and other challenges faced as our community continues to grow. Currently there are plans to add 4 additional operators to the SWAT team and this will require the purchase of body armor and accessories for each of these operators.
The final project for this year's funds will be the School Resource Officer Immediate Response Project. The department's 13 school resource officers work inside the schools wearing their standard issue soft body armor. While inside the schools they do not have access to higher threat level protective equipment that other officers have available to them in their patrol cars. Because the SRO is likely the very first law enforcement representative to respond to an active threat in the schools, they need quick access to enhanced ballistic protection afforded by rifle plates and their carriers. In the event of an incident in the schools, the SRO won't have time to respond to their patrol vehicle to retrieve this equipment. To provide the SRO access to this ballistic protection, the department would like to purchase 13 additional sets of these rifles plates and carriers to be secured in the SRO's school office.
Utilizing JAG funds for these projects will enhance the St. George Police Departments ability to respond to varying levels of incidents within the City of St. George.
