Iron County Wants to Hear from You
The Iron County Jail on north Main Street in Cedar City is one of the oldest operating jails in Utah. Built in 1987, it is outdated and has many unrepairable components. Because it is now too small, the Iron County Jail must turn away some arrestees from local law enforcement. Every time we refuse an arrestee, we redefine the level of acceptable crime in our community.
Utah state law requires that county sheriffs provide a secure holding facility to protect the citizens of their county. Iron County has made an offer on land to build a new Sheriff's Complex near the Cedar City Airport, northwest of Horse Alley. The new facility will house the Sheriff's Department and the county jail, as well as other agencies. Maps, pictures, and sketches are available on ironcounty.net. Iron County has set aside funds for many years to help finance the new facility and is pursuing the necessary financing.
Please let us know what you think. There will be a public hearing at 10:00 a.m., on March 13th during the regular Iron County Commission meeting at 68 S 100 E in Parowan. Comments may also be submitted via email to clerk.group@ironcounty.net or by calling (435) 327-0977. Thanks!
