Engineer Parker Vercimak provided information to the Aurora City Council in preparation for the public hearing that was to follow. Mr. Vercimal stated that Aurora City has 766.4 acre feet of underground water for usage from all sources. Currently, the City is using only about 25-30 percent of that allowed water. Mr. Vercimak stated that a calculated demand for culinary water would provide sufficient water for 2 percent growth for the next 25 years. Using some of the culinary water for outside irrigation purposes would change that dynamic somewhat with two major problems.
1- The culinary water system was not designed to be used for irrigation purposes. The size of the pipes and the age of the system could be a problem if the City was to cause a large increase in the volume of water that is run through the system.
2- The increase in demand on the culinary water system for irrigation purposes would create a need for further storage. Currently the system is good and has more than enough storage for future growth for the next 25 years. A change in the ordinance could create a demand for further storage needs.
Mr. Vercimak discussed some of the requirements of HB 242 and metering problems and systems. He mentioned that some communities have moved forward in securing funding for the requirements and are planning on installation of the meters soon. He stated that there is only a certain amount of money provided to communities on a 70%-30% grant to debt ratio. Currently Annabella is the only community in Sevier County to have money approved for their project.
The work session ended at 6:45 as the Council prepared for the public hearing.
