SCHOOL BOARD MEETING MINUTES May 12, 2022 Board Meeting The Murray City School Board met in a regular board meeting on May 12, 2022 at 5:00 p.m. In attendance were Jaren Cooper, Glo Merrill, Belinda Johnson, Elizabeth Payne, Jennifer Covington, Superintendent, and Richard Reese, Business Administrator. The meeting was held at 5102 South Commerce Drive, Murray, UT. Pledge of Allegiance Suzie Gilmore, student at Grant Elementary, led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance. Recognition Teacher of the Year - Katelyn McBride, Special Education teacher at Longview Elementary, was introduced as the Murray City School District Teacher of the Year. She will represent MCSD in the statewide competition. Classified Employee of the Year - Jean Blackbum, Lunch Manager at Viewmont Elementary, was introduced as the Murray City School District Classified Employee of the Year. 2022 Retirees -Jennifer Covington, Superintendent, read the list of20 employees retiring this year from Murray City School District. They are: 1. Linda Auwerda - Teacher, McMillan, 26 years 2. Kelly Beardall - Teacher, Riverview Jr. High, 29 years 3. Randy Bodily - Teacher, Riverview Jr. High, 45 years 4. Scott Bushnell - Assistant Superintendent, District Office, 34 years 5. Kathy Chappell - Financial Secretary, Murray High, 26 years 6. Tim Christensen - Bus Driver, District Office, 35 years 7. Jim Bouwman - Principal, Hillcrest Jr. High, 34 years 8. Paul Drake - Teacher, Murray High, 35 years 9. Mark Durfey - Teacher, Murray High, 31 years 10. Melia Fidel - Library Media Specialist, Murray High, 22 years 11. Stephanie Fry - Nutrition Services, Murray High, 30 years 12. Keeko Georgelas - Teacher, Murray High, 34 years 13. Lorraine Henderson - Special Ed Bus Aid, District Office, 33 years 14. Shawn Johnson - Psychologist, Liberty, 28 years 15. Kristin Loulias - Instructional Coach, District Office, 34 years 16. Anthony Manning - Bus Driver, District Office, 14 years 17. Pam Mantle - Counselor, Riverview Jr. High, 26 years 18. Crystal Spackman - Teacher, Murray High, 33 years 19. Caryn Waterman - Administrative Assistant, Horizon, 15 years 20. Cherran Zullo, Social Worker, Viewmont Elementary, 25 years Administrative Appointments Jennifer Covington, Superintendent, presented the following administrators for Board approval. Scott Wihongi, Assistant Superintendent - Mr. Wihongi is currently the Principal at Murray High School. Glo Merrill made a motion to accept his appointment. Belinda Johnson seconded the motion which was approved unanimously. Scott Taggart, Director of Support Services - Mr. Taggart is currently employed in Canyons School District as the Assistant Director of Maintenance. Belinda Johnson made a motion to accept his appointment. Glo Merrill seconded the motion which was approved unanimously. Quinn Lindy, Principal of Murray High School - Mr. Lindy is currently employed as a High School Vice- Principal in Canyons School District. Glo Merrill made a motion to accept his appointment. Elizabeth Payne seconded the motion which was approved unanimously. Consent Agenda The consent agenda included Approval of Minutes -April 14, 2022 and April 28,2022, claims, financial reports, and SP 918: Placement, Vacancy, Transfers, and Promotion Policy (2nd Reading). Belinda Johnson made a motion to approve the consent agenda. Elizabeth seconded the motion which was approved unanimously. Delegations PTA - Mary Gilmore, President of the Grant Elementary PTA, addressed the Board regarding PTA activities at the school including the Fall Carnival, Science Fair, Spelling Bee, Fun Run, Teacher Appreciation and fundraising for $300 teacher grants. MEA - Mark Durfey, President, said that he is proud to work in Murray School District. He also noted that MEA has the highest enrollment in the state at 70%. MASA - No comments. MESPA-Thayn Burnett, said that he has appreciated working with many of the current retirees. He is also looking forward to the end of the year. FOUNDATION -Jeanne Habel, Director, reminded the Board of the Foundation Golf Tournament on August 26, 2022. This will be the 25th year of hosting the tournament. Patron Statements - No comments. Report of the Board Glo Merrill- Ms. Merrill said that she feels that MCSD is the best school district in the State. She thanked everyone for coming together and helping each other. Jaren Cooper - Mr. Cooper said that he had the opportunity to participate in the administrative interviews and is pleased with those who have accepted positions in MCSD. He stated that he was elected to the Board of Education six years ago at the same time as Glo Merrill who will be retiring from the Board on June 1, 2022. He thanked her for her career in MCSD as an educator and as a Board Member. Belinda Johnson - Ms. Johnson said that the Utah High School Athletic Association is very busy this time of year and will soon have awarded 44 State Championships. She acknowledged the group ofretirees and said she appreciates each of them. Elizabeth Payne - Ms. Payne expressed her congratulations to the Teacher and Classified employees of the Year. She thanked Glo Merrill for her years of service to the school district and the school board. Report of the Staff Secondary School Counseling- Wendy Sanders, Murray High School Counselor, made a presentation on the Secondary School Counseling Program and data projects from Hillcrest, Riverview, and Murray High School. Elementary English Language Arts Textbook Adoption - Missy Hamilton, Elementary Teaching and Leaming Director, presented the textbook adoption plan as a second reading. SP 915: Social Media Policy - Missy Hamilton, Elementary Teaching and Leaming Director, presented the new policy with some updates requested by the Board as a second reading. PS 426: Student Dress Code - Darren Dean, Director of Personnel and Student Services, presented the updated dress code as a second reading. Food Service Management Contract - Richard Reese, Business Administrator, presented an amendment to the Sodexo Food Service Management contract for fiscal year 2022-23. The amendment calls for increase of $0.1224 per meal served with a new contract amount of $1.897 per meal. Belinda Johnson made a motion to approve the amendment. Glo Merrill seconded the motion which was approved unanimously. 2022-2023 School Meal Prices - Richard Reese, Business Administrator, submitted a proposal that calls for meal increases of $0.10 for students, $0.50 for adults, and $0.25 for visiting children for the upcoming 2022-23 school year. The contract amendment is effective July l, 2022. Belinda Johnson made a motion to approve the price increases. Glo Merrill seconded the motion which was approved unanimously. 2022-23 Preliminary Budget Report - Richard Reese, Business Administrator, presented preliminary inforn1ation regarding the 2022-23 budget. The full budget will be presented in the June 9, 2022 budget meeting. REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT-Jennifer Covington, Superintendent School Land Trust Amendments - Superintendent Covington presented three amendments to the current 2021-22 plan for Viewmont Elementary. Elizabeth Payne made a motion to approve the amendments. Belinda Johnson seconded the motion which was approved unanimously. 2022-2023 School Laud Trust Plans (2m1 Reading) - Superintendent Covington presented the 2022-2023 plans for all schools in Murray City School District as a second reading. Belinda Johnson made a motion to approve the plans. Glo Menill seconded the motion which was approved unanimously. 2022-2023 Teacher Student Success Plans (2nd Reading) - Superintendent Covington presented the 2022-2023 plans for all schools in Murray City School District as a second reading. Elizabeth Payne made a motion to approve the plans. Glo Menill seconded the motion which was approved unanimously. The Board was polled at 7:23 p.m. and was unanimous in holding a closed session. The Board meeting was adjourned at 7:52 p.m.
