Presentation
Special Response Team (SRT) Presentation by Donny VanMoose with Provo Fire.
Donny VanMoose presented on the Special Response Team (SRT). The SRT responds to HAZMAT, high angle, confined space, trench, structure collapse, and water rescue.
Each participating department has a specialty, and houses and maintains the equipment for that specialty (Provo - Structure, Orem - Hazmat, Lehi - Trench, Saratoga - Water Rescue). The members of the team train extensively in all areas. The nearest station will respond and SRT will be called out if applicable. Response times vary, but the first station will get the ball rolling with a few SRT on scene. Within the hour, the team will be on scene if necessary. Priorities are life safety, incident stabilization, property conservation. Once priorities are achieved, the situation is passed off for clean up. For example: Save the life, stop the leak, contain the spill, pass it off.
If you have an incident at your facility, you can provide the following information to be of most help: head count and injuries, products involved including quantity and type (MSDS), and pertinent facility information. You should find command (guy in the white hat) and stay nearby to answer questions.
Questions
How often do you get called out?
A few times a year.
For larger facilities - do you have access to plans? Or should you have it ready?
Tier IIs are available, but it's best to have it there and give it to the white hat. There is a lot of info they don't have. They try to get it, but it is difficult to get. It's best to have it on-site and ready if possible.
Do you make notifications up the chain?
Anyone who is affected should be notified by dispatch through the Chief (emergency managers, EPA, airport, water conservation district).
Do you get involved in HAZMAT drills?
Not really. They have participated in mass casualty exercises.
From a budgetary standpoint - do you have issues getting funding for materials? How do you utilize data?
Most money comes from the County. Some departments fund the training and small equipment.
Companies said they would be happy to do exercises with SRT and they want to have discussions about how they can partner to increase equipment and cover needs. These relationships and partnerships are the reason for LEPC - getting everyone in the same room helps start discussions.

November: Civil Support Team (US ARMY) - The US Army will be completing an exercise at the Sheriff's office and we will be able to observe part of their operation that day.
December: Social for all to enjoy.

What topics are pertinent?
All topics may be pertinent. There is turnover, and many businesses are not involved or are new. Spill and release is a subject that people mentioned being interested in.
How do we get more people at the table who are not reporting?
Anyone who generates waste must have an EPA number. The board will inquire with DEQ to acquire information if possible and extend invitations.

We encourage EMs to contact facilities in your city and invite them to join LEPC, many of them may not know what LEPC is or that they should be involved. Kelly has had a great reception to reaching out and developing relationships.
