5. Conference and conventions update - Max Jensen, Zermatt Resort - We have partnered with resorts for FAM tours and to get special groups here. Max represents HV and we will help sponsor. Max has some results to report. Max has been in ski industry for a long time and has been promoting Utah domestically and internationally for 22 years. Max started work at Zermatt 2 years ago. With Vail resorts in the area all the pricing across the board has gone up in Park City. Some of the skiers cannot afford PC any longer. Aspen, Vail, and Breckenridge have had similar issues. Skiers are staying in other towns. Great opportunity for us to capture skiers. Our biggest competition is Salt Lake. We have an attractive mountain village. Skiers are afraid of how they will get to the mountain to ski. Transportation is a challenge. Zermatt has some shuttles and can accommodate 55 people. FAM tours were wowed. Could not believe the scenery and proximity. Also close to Sundance. Less expensive. 8 ski clubs last year - each club includes 8 - 55 people. No ski racks - had to purchase them. 22 ski clubs have been booked 20 - 200 people. National audience, international audience - German clubs. Max is heading to Germany tomorrow to promote the Valley. Growing trend - we need to prepare because it will not go away once the flood gates are open. Originally from Yorkshire England. We are most appealing to certain markets internationally. Ski Utah has put Heber and Midway in the International guide. 12 journalists came to write about the Secret Side of Sundance. New York Times, Travel and Leisure, Conde Nast, New Zealand Herald - A-list journalists. Everyone has produced except one. Winter tourism revenue will go up all resorts and restaurants will see an increase. We will need transportation to get people around - it will have to be addressed. Park City bus system may be federally funded - Ryan will investigate. Groups are arriving in a coach rented from airport. Canyon transportation is offering shared ride transportation from airport to Zermatt for $60. Partnership with UBER and LYFT are options. Need to discuss transportation in future meeting. Chamber offered a program for hospitality training before Olympics. Kids and adults don't understand customer service. Businesses are struggling to get good employees.
6. Arts Center Feasibility Study Presentation - Mike Glenn - first public release. Study attached. Purpose of study will show how to access the needs and desires for arts in the community. Vision is to create a memorable experience setting for the arts. Started public private partnership with the coalition. Identified scope of work for feasibility, demand, and more. Victus is a Park City firm - best choice as qualified. Brian from Victus, three-month period December through March. Community engagement process - user groups. Comparable venues- case studies, facility types - researched the recommendations. Focus group - see slide, identify baseline for arts in this community. 30,000 patrons in 2017 as attendants and participants. Significant considering the population of the County. 1:1 ratio of participants. 85% of Utah adults attend arts events - including going to the movies. 54% participate in performing arts. 70% of Utah homes have pianos. Utah is a state of doers not watchers. Obstacles for arts groups - space. 65,000 - 75,000 gsf to accommodate all arts groups in the Valley. Other areas similar to HV - Centerville and Bountiful. 100% cost to operator. Provo - Covey Center - public venue. Rose Wagner in Salt Lake County started with performing arts coalition. Busiest performing arts center I the state of Utah. Using sales tax increment and subsidy. Earned revenues avg 40-70% of total expenses. Goal is to break even. Fundraising and tax. Ownership: Private/non-profit, public/private partnership, public. Capital funding - naming rights opportunity or private funding model. Nearly $194 million in cumulative net economic output. Nearly 2.6% in tax revenue. Two different centers, Mountain Village Arts Center vs. Heber Valley Community Arts. Ownership, governance, operations, and booking. Community Arts facilities are regional. Educational programs to engage the community. Public/private partnerships drive outcomes. Regional transportation corridors influence site. How many years to breaking ground - 31-36 months from go. 3-5 years is more likely. Continued support is appreciated. Can come back with costs for next steps.
7. Sue Waldrip - High Valley Arts - Mountain Village Arts Center - privately funded arts facility. Coalition has agreed to be supportive of this plan. No taxes involved High Valley Arts as resident theater company. Freedom centered performances. High Valley Arts is currently leasing facility. Lustre development owns half of property necessary. If property develops with current zoning commercial buildings will be right on Main Street. Hoping to preserve the beauty of Midway. Arts Center will provide $10.5 million to Midway City over 30 years in tax revenue. Pure Midway folks are very concerned about open space. HVA has made sure developers will purchase open space. If Midway City doesn't want the facility they have an offer from a Heber City developer. High Valley Arts came along as a first step knowing the government could not participate.
