June Minutes for Review
SAFETY NET MEETING – June 13, 2013
Participants: Jenni Frey, Carolyn Hamblin, Marlene, Marlyne Hammon, Priscilla Hammon, Stephen Sullivan, Adam Elliott, Nelda Kissinger, Craig Bunnell, Jan Thompson, Candice Babb, Paul Murphy, Jean Goode, Shelli Mecham, Anne Wilde, Ruth Cooke, Lori Chatwin, Brent Hofhines, A J Hunt, Peg Coleman,Lenora Allred, Teresa Banks, Ross Chatwin
Welcome and introductions were extended by Jennifer Frey. The minutes were reviewed and approved.
Nelda Kissinger gave a presentation about the Adult Education program in Washington County. Some of the information she shared is that services are available to anyone from age 16 and up. They must show
residency in Utah, but can be from Arizona since it is a border program. Government issued photo ID isrequired. The fee for the GED test is $120 and can be waived if needed. It was mentioned that Mohave
Community College also has a GED prep program. The program will be computer based beginningJanuary 1, 2014, and GED tests not completed before then will be invalid.
Safety Net Conference Report: There were about 90 people attending the conference this year . Some of the comments suggested that the strengths of polygamy be presented in a conference.
Community and Agency Reports:
Ross Chatwin presented information on a community garden and hopes to set up a 501.3c as a nonprofit association. It was suggested he look at corporation.utah.gov as well as talk with the Southern Utah Bar Association. Ross can be reached at 435-212-8104.
CPAC commented on the TV program produced by the National Geographic Magazine and their experiences with this.
UDVC announced the annual conference will be October 28-30 at the Davis County Convention Center.
Craig Bunnell mentioned some changes in the court system. There will be one guardian ad litem dedicated to an issue.
Paul Murphy announced a town hall meeting at El Capitan School on June 20 to establish a new Board of Trustees to get the property to the people. He also mentioned a tour to be conducted following the
meeting today of Warren Jeffs home that was purchased by Willie Jessop.
Since housing is a critical issue, it was suggested that the Washington County commission could speak about this at a Safety Net meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:00.
