MOTION: Motion was made by Kent McComb to approve the minutes of May 7th,
2012. Jeannine Holt seconded the motion. Matt Spendlove and David
Hafen voted aye. The motion carried.
Item #2. PROGRESS REPORT—Dale Gubler
Dale Gubler reported that he has been spraying weeds all over the county; in his opinion, the weeds are being controlled better than they have been in years.
There were three employees in attendance today from the Dixie National Forest, they introduced themselves to the board and discussed with Mr. Gubler the weed problems on Juniper Road, as well as in Central, Pine Valley, and Enterprise.
a) Summer Weed Supervisor Convention---Wasatch County in May
Dale Gubler reported on the Summer Weed Supervisor Convention in Wasatch County, which he attended in May. Mr. Gubler discussed the Yellow Toadflax problem they have, and the chemicals Wasatch County uses to control it. Mr. Gubler also commented that Wasatch County uses Tordon and 24-D, as well as a little Milestone, which is the same as he uses.
Mr. Gubler commented that he prefers Tordon to Milestone, because Tordon seems to kill most weeds faster than Milestone.
Item #3. BOARD MEMBERS ITEMS
a) Tamarisk Beetle Program
Brad Hays of Santa Clara City reported that the Tamarisk Beetles have worked very well in Santa Clara this year.
Mr. Gubler commented that he doesn’t use this program, also commenting that the Cities in Washington County use the Tamarisk Beetles more often, and seem to have more success than he has had.
b) Mites to control Morning Glory
Kent McComb reported that he had received Mites from Kim Leany, who asked that they be distributed in the Central and Enterprise areas. The mites are reported to be successful in controlling Morning Glory.
c) Status of Grants
Tyce Palmer reported on a $5,000.00 Grant received for White Top in the New Harmony area. The Grant is for Iron County, but will cover the Washington County side as well.
Mr. Palmer commented that he is hoping to put together a large scale grant application for White Top for 2013.
Item #4. ANY OTHER BUSINESS
a) Washington County Fair
Jeannine Holt inquired about the Washington County Fair, and if we had anything planned this year. Robert Sandberg of HCP commented that his Dept. will have a booth at the Fair, and the Weed Board is welcome to add a display.
b) Farm Bureau Farm Fields Day at Staheli Farms
The annual Farm Bureau Farm Fields Days will be held this year at Staheli Farms on October 9th, 10th, and 11th. Carl Wadsworth, Kent McComb, and Dale Gubler will be attending this event.
There was discussion about the need for more weed literature for distribution for Farm Field Days, as well as other events. Dale Gubler commented that there are twelve new weeds in the state that should be in a new State Noxious Weed flyer.
Tyce Palmer recommended inquiring with the Dept. of Agriculture for updated Noxious Weed materials.
Item #6. NEXT MEETING
The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, November 5th, 2012, in the conference room of the Washington County Administration Building.
The meeting was adjourned at 3:45 by Kent McComb, Weed Board Vice Chairman.
