- The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) proposes a land acquisition involving 4,735 acres of private land in Carbon and Duchesne Counties. The property will become a Wildlife Management Area (WMA) and will be managed for wildlife habitat and hunting opportunities for the public. DWR acquiring this property will protect it from the disturbance associated with any future development, and will open up many acres of BLM and private land for wildlife recreation. If you would like to comment on this proposed land purchase, please send your written correspondence to dwrlands@utah.gov. The property is located in Carbon and Duchesne Counties in the Nine-Mile Canyon area. Acquisition of this property will create a new WMA in a region with a large proportion of private land. The property has significant wildlife values, providing habitat for deer, elk, moose, turkey, forest grouse and other wildlife species. The area contains a crucial winter and summer habitat for deer, as well as several water rights that can provide benefits to wildlife and existing grazing practices. The acquisition of the property will increase big game and upland game hunting opportunities in an area with limited public land. The property is currently grazed and DWR plans to continue the existing grazing. This acquisition presents a unique opportunity as DWR was approached by the landowner who is seeking to donate the property to the Division for wildlife conservation.
