Salt Lake Arts Academy Governing Board Meeting DRAFT MINUTES August 19, 2025, 6:00 pm https://us06web.zoom.us/j/84285291333 Board Members in Attendance: Diana Cabrales, Sarah Colonna, Kelly Goff, Greg Ostrander, Shantel Stoff, Kimberly Venable, Nick Vienneau, Amy Yuda Board Members Excused: Cat Palmer Staff in Attendance: Deborah Candler, Whitney Childers, Jen Guillory, Nicole Laird Others in Attendance: Several parents / prospective board members - Amy Fehlberg, Carol Finnegan, Claudia Geist, Whitney Provo (calling in) 1. Welcome and Introductions (Greg Ostrander) 6:00 p.m. 2. Review and Approval of Minutes from June 23, 2025 (All) 6:15.p.m. Amy Yuda moved to approve minutes from 6/23/25 as presented Nick Vienneau seconded the motion Motion approved unanimously 3. Principal's Report (Deborah Candler) 6:20 p.m. Resurfacing of Basketball Court - Vote Expected Huge donation to help fund part Huge rocks, New asphalt, new tables, shed gone Kids are already using space! Contractor for asphalt is lower than others; plus epoxy/paint basketball court $3780 - $5350; other estimates are all well over $5000 Discussion Nick Vienneau moved to resurface the basketball court Kelly Goff seconded the motion Motion approved unanimously Hammocks - Vote Expected Outdoor all-weather playground hammocks, roughly $5500 for three Lively discussion - e.g. are hammocks safe? and safe from kids, too? Liability? Good use of $? These are tested from public playgrounds and have a 20-yr warranty; top/bottom anchors We should set expectations for use We can 'what-if?' about everything we do; can't guarantee success but let's try Kids rise to the occasion - community is excited Will take back to board if any price increase Shantel Stoff moved to approve buying hammocks for price quoted Nick Vienneau seconded the motion Motion approved unanimously Aside discussion: Deborah met with Glenn and he plans to come begin watching teachers Had some Covid/illness cases last week but today only one teacher out sick Really smooth start to school today! Enrollment is good Looking for subs, as usual (Kelly expounded) Community Engagement Board Committee - parent/teacher confs coming up - provide food? Greg asked Whitney about her new perspective Instagrams are exciting! Email updates are wonderful (Thursdays)! Using Edlio for newsletters now (much better than Compass); plus a school app thru Edlio Request to forward email updates to Board members Also now using social media platforms to send out important info and updates 4. Acceptance of Nominations of New Board Members - Vote Expected 6:40 p.m. Carol Finnegan, Claudia Geist, Amy Fehlberg, Whitney Provo, Reid Prentice, Nick Steffens Kimberly Venable moved to accept nominations of new board members Nick Vienneau seconded the motion Motion approved unanimously 5. Discussion of Committees (Greg Ostrander) 6:50 p.m. The Board has been historically 'under-committeed'; would like to expand work Increase Board presence, improve Board governance; deeper dives, more guidance NOT running operations - that is for SLArts Admin Committees open to non-board members, but do require commitment Admin does not to be on committees even when involved in issues More time in Board meetings for updates from Committee Chairs Sign up now or later via email or other 2025-26 Committees (provisional): - Governance Committee (replacing previous 'Governance Committee' but was more of an Executive Committee) - welcome new members (minimum # on Board is 9), requirements/trainings, manage recruitment, evaluate board, board/school policies, interface with school - Finance Committee - monthly meeting, meets with Nicole, would appreciate a CPA - Policy Committee - Amy Yuda has worked tirelessly for several years - Academic Excellence (new) - many charter schools use this, maintain high standards, interface with Admin plus evaluate metrics for our students - Student Behavior Committee (new) - Board interaction with Admin on metrics/success of outside; also need a parent on PBIS - Community Building Committee - Events/engagement/events with parents and work closely with Admin and Whitney - Executive Committee - not for sign up, not yet adopted, discuss in September (Chair, Treasurer, Secretary; primarily for short-term needs not requiring a full board vote) 6. Requests to Speak 7:00 p.m none 7. Adjournment Kelly Goff moved to adjourn the meeting Shantel Stoff seconded the motion Motion approved unanimously *Requests to Speak Persons requesting to speak to the Governing Board in an open meeting need to sign up prior to the start of the open session of the board meeting, by emailing Greg Ostrander at greg.ostrander@slarts.org. Resolution of questions or responses to proposals should not be expected at this meeting; staff or others may be asked to research and/or prepare materials and solutions for a later time. Up to fifteen minutes in total will be scheduled for persons requesting to speak. Three minutes will be allotted for individual requests and five minutes will be allotted for group requests. If we receive more requests than the allotted time permits, those requests may be scheduled for the next board meeting. Your concerns may be submitted in writing to the principal's office for distribution to the Governing Board at any time.
