A retiree reception was held for all those retiring and their families in the commons area of Alice C. Harris Intermediate School. Michelle McConkie from the State Trust Lands Administration presented the video that Garland Elementary submitted for the state wide contest. Garland Elementary was awarded first place in the contest and received a $250 check. Nancy Kennedy, Trustlands Advisory Committee Member and former School Board Member, accepted the award on behalf of Garland Elementary. Julie Taylor nominated Wade Hyde for President Pro Tempore; Karen Cronin seconded the motion. No other nominations were made. Approval was unanimous. Braun Bowden, CTE Teacher at Box Elder High School presented on the BEHS little house construction projects. The students participating in the project were also in attendance. The little house construction project is done in conjunction with The Otherside Village. Superintendent Carlsen highlighted the Box Elder High School collaboration with the Otherside Village. Braun Bowden provided a detailed explanation of the collaboration. Certificated Employee and Volunteer Recognitions Lewis Whitaker, BEAA president, presented the following awards: - Outstanding District Administrator: Coerina Fife - Outstanding Elementary Administrator: Kristi Capener-Fielding Elementary - Outstanding Secondary Administrator: Chad Kirby-Bear River Middle - Outstanding Related Services: Kenley Kellerstrass-School Nurse - Outstanding Related Services: Eric Dutson-Speech Therapist - Outstanding Elementary Teacher: Chrissy Nelson-McKinley Elementary - Outstanding Elementary Teacher: Kristen Taylor-Discovery Elementary - Outstanding Secondary Teacher: Tom Davidson-BEHS - Outstanding Secondary Teacher: Daniel Francom-Alice C. Ben Wiley commented on CTE programs and the benefits of the CTE programs to schools and the community. Specifically, he was supportive of moving the 9th grade to the high schools. First Public Comment on School Fees Keith Mecham, Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education, presented the school fee schedule. Julie Taylor and Karen Cronin asked clarifying questions on school fees. Cassandra Merill provided public comment in support of the school fees plan and offered to help support the District in a way to raise awareness of school fees. Julie Shumway believes school fees should not go up, and believes public education should be free. Action Items Approval of Amendment to Century Elementary's 2024-25 SLT Plan Heidi Jo West, Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Teaching & Learning presented the amendment to the Century Elementary School Land Trust Plan. Julie Taylor motioned to approve the SLT Plan amendments. Karen Cronin seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously. Karen Cronin - Yes Julie Taylor - Yes Wade Hyde - Yes Bryan Smith - Yes Information Items ACT Data Jeff Morris, Assessment Director, presented the 2024-25 ACT data and student outcomes. Karen Cronin asked a clarifying question on college readiness and the ACT data. Adult Education State Audit Report (Sunrise High School) Keith Mecham, Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education, presented the results of Adult Education audit by the USBE. Karen Cronin commented in support of the efforts of the adult education program at Sunrise High School. Counseling Report Ben Wiley, CTE Director, presented the School Counseling report. USBE has approval the changes to the school counselor ratios in BESD secondary schools. Governor's Visit to Box Elder Middle School Keith Mecham, Assistant Superintendent, presented on the impromptu visit by Governor Cox to Box Elder Middle School. The Governor played kickball with students and visited with teachers. Monthly Financial Report Neil Stevens, Business Administrator, presented the year end changes to state funding and preliminary allocations for the next school year. Several Board Members asked clarifying questions on the allocation amounts. Board Committee Reports Karen Cronin asked clarifying questions on school safety and having doors locked while teaching. Superintendent Carlsen answered the questions. Student Board Member Report Easton Johnson presented the Student Board Member report on athletic achievements, scholarships awarded, and year-end high school activities in Elder School District. Superintendent Carlsen presented Easton with a plaque and award and thanked him for his service. Policy 2030 was changed to reflect that the Board will approve contracts and purchases over $150,000. Definitions on Policy 5110 were clarified. No changes were made to Policy 5110. Superintendent Carlsen clarified the changes to 3008 that no retaliation would occur. Karen Cronin motioned to approve these policies on first reading. Stephanie DeFilippis seconded the motion.
