OFFICIAL MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION BOX ELDER COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT School Reports David Lee, principal of Garland Elementary reported on Garland Elementary progress for the 2015-16 school year from 5:00 to 5:15. Tentative minutes of a Special Board Meeting of the Board of Education, Box Elder County School District, held Wednesday evening July 6, 2016 at 5:15 p.m. at the Box Elder High School. Those in attendance at the meeting included Board President Lynn Capener, Vice President Wade Hyde, Members Nancy Kennedy, Connie Archibald, Bryan Smith, and Karen Cronin. Also present were Superintendent Ronald Tolman, Assistant Superintendents Darin Nielsen and Terry Jackson, Business Administrator Rod Cook, officers of the Box Elder Education Association, district employees, representatives of the press potential board members, and interested citizens. President Capener welcomed those in attendance and conducted the business of the meeting. After the prayer, which was offered by Connie Archibald, Dr. Ron Tolman led the audience in the pledge of allegiance to the flag. Approval of Agenda Nancy Kennedy made the motion to approve the agenda. Wade Hyde seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. Action Items Interviews for Board Member Position The following people had applied and were interviewed by the Board for the vacant board position. Dave Madsen Nini Anderson Mitch Zundel Closed Session to Consider Personnel Issues Karen Cronin made the motion to move into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel. Bryan Smith seconded the motion which carried unanimously. A verbal poll revealed a unanimous vote in favor. Karen Cronin made the motion to move back into open board meeting. Wade Hyde seconded the vote, which passed unanimously. A verbal poll was unanimous in the affirmative. Approval of Administrative Assignments As vacancies in the district administrative team occur announcements are made so that all District employees have an opportunity to apply for consideration to fill available openings. A committee of District administrators, typically the Superintendent, the two Assistant Superintendents, and the Director of Assessment, review the work of the candidates, interview the candidates to get a sense of the vision and commitment for the position and make a decision regarding the best match to the position. If needed. The district reserves the opportunity to advertise the position out of the district and continues the process until a suitable candidate is selected for the position. The assignments are then offered to those selected and plans are made for transitions. The following recommendation was made by administration: Teresa Garrett as the intern assistant principal at Bear River Middle School Jamie Kent as principal at Dale Young Community High School David Lee as principal at Foothill Elementary School Shaylyn Ekins as principal at Garland Elementary School Alison Williams moving from teacher on special assignment status to assistant principal at Harris Intermediate School. Karen Cronin made the motion to approve the administrative assignments for the 2016-17 school year as recommended by administration. Nancy Kennedy seconded the motion which passed unanimously. Work Session Board Self Evaluation Richard Stowell facilitated the self-evaluation of the board. Items to be accomplished in the self-evaluation: - Use the information to become better - Roadmap to ongoing improvement - What is missing and what needs to be done Ideas: (Big Rocks) Board Handbook Communications Survey employees & patrons? Data Driving Decisions based on our priorities Adjournment With the announcement that the next meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. at the District Office, President Capener adjourned the meeting at 9:00 p.m. APPROVED: July 13, 2016 ATTESTED: School Business Administrator President, Board of Education Box Elder School District
