Utah Governor Gary R. Herbert, has authorized all state agencies to lower the Flag of the United States of America and the Flag of the State of Utah on Saturday, March 6, 2010. The flags shall be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on March 6, 2010 to honor Lance Corporal Carlos A. Aragon. Lance Corporal Aragon, 19, died March 1 while supporting combat operations in Afghanistan's Helmand province.

Federal funding for energy-related projects has exploded, providing Utah opportunities to leverage existing strengths and create jobs in the new energy economy. Through the end of 2009, USTAR's Technology Outreach team coordinated and supported $1.1 billion in grant applications, for USTAR and non-USTAR entities. Utah-supported applicants have won more than $40 million in new research funding so far, with an additional $450 million pending.

Amy Clay came to the Career and Networking Fair, held Tuesday at Ogden-Weber Applied Technology College, looking for one thing: a job. Clay has been out of work since August after 10 years doing medical transcription work. "I'm keeping my options open," she said about her job search. "I'm considering school. I'm reaching my 40s, so if I'm going to (change careers), this is the time." She said she received good information and saw several job prospects at the fair.

The Division of Wildlife Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will host Utah's annual Tundra Swan Day on March 13, 2010. Admission is free. Viewing will take place at three sites?the Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area west of Farmington, the Salt Creek WMA west of Corinne and the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge west of Brigham City.

Former U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program bobsledder Steven Holcomb of Park City ended Team USA?s 62-year gold medal drought in Olympic bobsled by driving to victory in the four-man event Feb. 27 at Whistler Sliding Centre.
The seminar is hosted by the Bridgerland Applied Technology College in Brigham City on March 17th.

A unanimous preliminary vote in the Senate on Friday puts the College of Eastern Utah one step closer to a proposed affiliation with Utah State University. SB69, sponsored by Sen. David Hinkins, R-Orangeville, puts the care of the two-year community college, which has struggled with enrollment numbers and finances, under the authority of the research institution in Logan, however, with a chancellor at the helm.

Through a scientific examination of the scholarly output of universities on the Web, the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities places the University of Utah at 48th best out of more than 18,000 others worldwide. That's an improvement of eight spots from the previous ranking.

A group of Weber State University students have received a grant from NASA to do some light dusting ? of the stratosphere. WSU's High Altitude Reconnaissance Balloon for Outreach and Research team has received a $25,000 grant from NASA to monitor atmospheric dust over the Wasatch Front. In particular, the researchers are trying to learn more about stratospheric aerosols, an important but poorly understood aspect of Earth's climate.

Kids can catch fish, learn about predators and find out how to ride an ATV safely at this year's DNR Youth Outdoor Sports Fair. The sports fair is part of the upcoming International Sportsmen's Exposition. The expo will be held March 18 to March 21,2010 at the South Towne Exposition Center, 9575 S. State in Sandy. The cost to attend the exposition, which includes the youth fair, is $12 for adults. Kids 15 years of age or younger can attend for free.

The International Trade and Diplomacy Office (ITDO) of the Governor?s Office of Economic Development is pleased with its 2009 year-end commodity export figures as announced by the U.S. Department of Commerce. Utah companies exported over $10.3 billion in 2009 which equaled their export dollars from 2008.

Production agriculture and the agricultural processing and manufacturing sectors are important elements of the economy in the state of Utah. These economic sectors contribute jobs, income, fiscal revenues, and quality of life to not only rural regions of the state, but also to its more urbanized regions. The agricultural processing sector and the production agriculture sector together account for $15.2 billion in total economic output in Utah after adjusting for multiplier effects.

Utah's first business incubator focused on IT and renewable energy opened its doors in mid-January near the campus of Dixie State College in St. George. A collaborative effort spearheaded by USTAR, the Southern Utah Information Technology and Renewable Energy Incubator (ITRE) helps Utah join several other states and cities investing in the start-up of new businesses focused on high technology, green technology and alternative energy.

A team of paleontologists from Dinosaur National Monument, Brigham Young University, and the University of Michigan has announced the discovery of a new, large, plant-eating dinosaur, Abydosaurus mcintoshi, (pronounced Ab-id-o-saurus mak-in-toshi). The discovery is described this week in the on-line first section of the science journal Naturwissenschaften.

The Utah Health Exchange announced the launch of a new pilot program designed to admit large employer groups into the Exchange earlier than originally anticipated. The Utah Health Exchange was not scheduled to admit large employer groups for testing until fall of 2011. However, Utah House Speaker David Clark included a provision in his most recent health system reform bill authorizing the Office of Consumer Health Services to initiate a pilot project for large employer groups.

Even if you're not going to hunt big game in Utah this fall, you can increase the chance you'll be chasing big game in the future by applying for a bonus point or a preference point. You can apply for a point at wildlife.utah.gov until 11 p.m. on March 8.
As many at 10,000 snow geese congregate each year at Gunnison Bend Reservoir near Delta. The annual Delta Snow Goose Festival attracts hundreds of people each year to see these pure white geese with black wing tips. This year the DWR will set up a camera at the festival and feed live video of the birds over the Internet.

The University of Utah now is ranked first in the country along with MIT in creating new startup companies from research-based inventions. This puts the University of Utah in front of prestigious institutions such as Columbia, Michigan and Johns Hopkins. The accomplishment is based on the latest survey by the Association of University Technology Managers, which ranks over 150 public and private research institutions throughout the country.
