University of Utah (U of U) medical researchers have uncovered a wiring diagram that shows how the brain pays attention to visual, cognitive, sensory, and motor cues. The research provides a critical foundation for the study of abnormalities in attention that can be seen in many brain disorders such as autism, schizophrenia, and attention deficit disorder. The study appears Nov. 1, 2010, online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

An economic analysis of the effects of using oil sands in asphalt pavement predicts an overall favorable economic result for private industry as well as for local and state governments. After five years of operation, the report projects that Uintah County could save nearly $45,000 per lane mile of pavement each subsequent year.

Utah's economy has expanded 3.5% annually over the past five years, faster than any other state except North Dakota. This is three-and-a-half times faster than the U.S. as a whole. Total employment in the U.S. has shrunk over the past five years, but in Utah it increased 1.5% annually, fourth-best in the nation.

Software company Adobe Systems will locate a new technology campus at Lehi City, Utah’s Traverse Mountain. The campus will measure 230,000 square feet and create approximately 1,000 new jobs in the next 20 years. Adobe already employs 620 people in Utah.

Construction crews have started work on a new freeway interchange off Interstate 15 in the middle of St. George, resurfacing efforts further north on the freeway are coming to a close, state Route 9 in Hurricane remains a construction zone and the next leg of the Southern Parkway is expected to open in January along with St. George's new airport.

The Utah Health Exchange did a limited launch last fall in a beta test to evaluate the technology and the dynamics of the market. Approximately 400 individuals have obtained their insurance through the Exchange as part of that beta test, according to Gochnour. This Fall the Exchange will begin a pilot program for large businesses—those with 51 or more employees.

USTAR is pleased to announce two new rounds of the Technology Commercialization Grant (TCG) program for Utah public regional higher education institutions and associated companies. In an effort to bring innovative new technologies to market, USTAR launched the TCG program in 2009 and conducted three rounds. Going forward, USTAR plans two more rounds with application deadlines of Sept. 30, 2010 and Dec. 31, 2010.

Water Prevention Solutions LLC, Utah State University’s third spinout company in fiscal year 2010 is centered on a USU technology created by former USU employees Jim Reese and Ron White. The new technology is a patent pending wastewater backflow valve that can be installed in new construction homes and businesses or retrofitted to work on existing pipes, even those made of clay.
