Friday October 30, World Trade Center Utah, Salt Lake Chamber and GOED hosted His Excellency Jorge Dezcallar de Mazarredo Ambassador to the United States for Spain. The Ambassador met with Utah business leaders including Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon, Executive Director of the GOED Mr. Spencer P. Eccles, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Salt Lake Chamber Mr. Jake Boyer, President of the World Trade Center Utah Mr. Lew Cramer, and representatives from local universities.

Last Tuesday, the BioInnovations Gateway (BiG) facility was launched as an incubator "for emerging biotech and medical device companies, a high-tech training facility for the next generation of bio-innovators, and a contract research resource for Utah's life- science industry." What makes BiG unique is that it provides the platform for bringing together the state's USTAR program for scientific innovation and actually preparing students for jobs to be created.

Twenty-three companies were launched from new technologies developed at the university within the last year. The companies not only move research forward through the licensing royalty revenue they bring in, but they provide jobs for the people of Utah and help to strengthen the economy of the state.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt said Friday that Utah does well in starting high tech companies that are key to the state's economic future but has trouble keeping them going and growing them fast enough.
