Utah's Labor Supply Going Forward

It is expected that over the next two years labor will remain in excess supply. The current payroll employment count of the Utah economy is roughly 38,000 jobs below the state’s previous employment peak achieved in early 2008.
New Wage Data Available from DWS

The latest wage data covering more than 600 Utah occupations is now available from the Department of Workforce Services. The wage data is broken out into ten geographic areas representing every county in the state, and is available online in a searchable database at http://jobs.utah.gov/jsp/wi/utalmis/gotoOccwage.do.
March Employment Summary: Unemployment at 5.8%

Utah’s nonfarm wage and salaried job count for March 2012, as generated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), expanded by 2.3 percent compared against the employment level for March 2011. This is a 12-month increase of 27,400 jobs, and raises total wage and salary employment to 1,218,100.

The 4th Annual Milford Renewable Energy Fair will take place on April 26th. Sponsored by the Southwest Utah RenewableEnergy Center (SUTREC), the fair is expected to attract 900 people from all across Utah and Nevada to Milford, Utah. The highlight of the fair is an electric vehicle endurance race that pits high school student teams against each other in a battle of engineering, science and driving skill.

The U.S. Department of Labor notified the State of Utah recently that based on data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the three-month average total unemployment rate for Utah fell below the 6 percent threshold to remain “on” Tier III of the federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program.

Newly Signed Legislation Lowers UI Contribution Rates!

The Governor signed into law recently passed legislation that effectively lowers Unemployment Insurance (UI) contribution rates paid by all contributory employers. The maximum UI contribution rate will be permanently lowered from 9% plus the social costs to 7% plus the social costs.
