Haze Hunter Conference Center Southern Utah University DAY TWO: Thursday, September 3 Intended outcome: Prioritize a list of actions for K-20 world class education focused on student outcomes and strategies to measure results. 8:00 Welcome and Introduction of Keynote Speaker 8:10 Turning Utah's Education System into a World Class Education System Participants will hear about national and international efforts to transform education systems to improve student outcomes with an opportunity for questions and answers Marc Tucker, President and CEO, National Center on Education and the Economy 9:40 Table Discussions Participants will discuss questions related to transforming Utah's education system in small groups to brainstorm strategies for improving student education outcomes in Utah Facilitated by Sen. Millner 10:25 Stretch Break 10:30 Kindergarten through Grade 12: Looking Forward Participants will hear about the future of kindergarten through grade 12 education in Utah. Brad Smith, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Utah State Office of Education 11:00 Higher Education: Performance Funding and Innovative Practices Participants will hear about innovative practices and performance funding in higher education. Sen. Steve Urquhart David Buhler, Commissioner of Higher Education, Utah System of Higher Education 11:40 Utah College of Applied Technology: Meeting Employer Needs Participants will hear about how the alignment of Utah College of Applied Technology programs and employer needs. Rob Brems, President, Utah College of Applied Technology 12:10 Aligning a World Class Education System with Competency Based Education Participants will hear about how creating a world class education system aligns with competency based education. Tom Vander Ark, Chief Executive Officer, Getting Smart Karla Phillips, State Policy Director of Competency Based Learning, Foundation for Excellence in Education 12:20 Lunch 1:00 Prioritization of Strategies Based on the strategies developed during the morning table discussions, participants will prioritize steps to improve student education outcomes in Utah.
