JOINT EDUCATION CONFERENCE Gilbert Great Hall, R. Haze Hunter Conference Center Southern Utah University DAY ONE: Wednesday, September 2 Intended outcome: develop a common understanding of K-20 competency based education and determine high level changes needed in various settings to achieve desired student outcomes. Approximate Time frame 8:00 Check-In 8:30 Welcome and Introduction to Competency Based Education Sen. Howard Stephenson Rep. Steve Eliason Lt. Governor Spencer Cox 9:00 National Perspective on Competency Based Education Participants will hear about a working definition for competency based education, and about the implementation of competency based education throughout the country. Tom Vander Ark, Chief Executive Officer, Getting Smart Karla Phillips, State Policy Director of Competency Based Learning, Foundation for Excellence in Education 9:30 Competency Based Education in Utah: A Conversation about Current Practices and the Future Participants will hear a moderated panel discussion about current competency based education practices in Utah, and options for competency based education moving forward. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions of the panelists. Moderated by Sen. Steve Urquhart Rob Brems, President, Utah College of Applied Technology Eric Heiser, Associate Dean of Applied Technology, Salt Lake Community College Thalea Longhurst, Director Career and Technical Education, Utah State Office of Education Brad Smith, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Utah State Office of Education Tom Vander Ark, Chief Executive Officer, Getting Smart Karla Phillips, State Policy Director of Competency Based Learning, Foundation for Excellence in Education 11:00 Stretch Break 11:05 Assessing Student Competencies Participants will hear about current practices in assessments, barriers to assessing competency, and policy implications of moving toward competency based education. Christie Fox, Director Utah Scholars and Completion Initiatives, Utah System of Higher Education Rich Nye, Associate Superintendent for Accountability and Assessment, Utah State Office of Education 12:05 Stretch Break 12:15 Working Lunch: Systems Change and Education What is the education system we need for the economy we have? What is the sense of opportunity where Utah's education system is right now, and where could it be? Participants will hear about how systems approaches and organizational change can influence education policy and student achievement. Jaime Casap, Chief Education Evangelist, Google 1:30 Preparing and Supporting Teachers for Improved Student Outcomes: A Conversation Participants will hear a moderated panel discussion about how teacher preparation programs and effectively train teachers for the modern classroom. Moderated by Elizabeth Hitch, Associate Commissioner for Academic Affairs, Utah System of Higher Education Martin Bates, Superintendent, Granite School District Chad Carpenter, Executive Director of Human Resources, Ogden School District Peter Ingle, Dean of Education, Westminster College Allison Riddle, Teacher Leader, Davis School District 2:30 Guided Discussion Participants will have the opportunity to discuss questions about competency based education in Utah in small groups at their tables.
