Governor Mike
Leavitt has named John E. Fowler as State Olympic Coordinator.
"I have
made a commitment to the citizens of this state that we will do
everything possible to ensure that the 2002 Winter Olympics are
successful and reflect positively on Utah," the governor said.
"The State Olympic Coordinator plays a vital role in this by
representing the state's interests during the planning process."
Fowler recently
returned from a full-time assignment for The Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints in England. An accountant by profession, he
was a partner in Peat Marwick (now KPMG) and worked in the firm's
Denver and New Orleans offices. He received his bachelors and masters
degrees from Brigham Young University
The Olympic
Coordinator position was created by statute this year to coordinate
the legal, financial and intergovernment arrangements necessary
for Utah to host the 2002 Winter Olympics. Together with Nolan Karras,
the governor's representative on the Salt Lake Organizing Committee,
he will represent the state's major interests in Olympic planning.
In addition,
Fowler will:
- be familiar
with and monitor all contractual and financial performances of
the Salt Lake City Organizing Committee
- coordinate
the activities of all state agencies so the state's obligation
to provide in-kind services is fully identified, and, to the extent
that policy requires, reimbursed by the organizing committee
- review all
contracts proposed between any state agency and any other agency
dealing with the Olympics to ensure the interests of the state
are fully protected
- work with
the Legislature, the Utah Sports Authority, and the Sports Advisory
Committee, to ensure they are fully informed and agreeable to
the conduct of the games and the financial arrangements that are
made.
Fowler will
maintain offices at the state Capitol and at Salt Lake Olympic headquarters.
Olympic president Frank Joklik has made space and administrative
assistance available to Fowler to maintain open communication between
the organizing committee and the state.
