Governor Makes Students and Literacy Top Priorities
Funding Given to Public Education, and Investments Made in Reading Program
Gov. Walker today announced her fiscal year 2005 budget recommendations to fund public education and to invest in a Performance Plus reading program.
Walker recommends a total of $115.8 million in new funding for public education, which translates to a 6.9 percent increase. This total includes $24.2 million of funding recommendations for 7,160 new students.

Walker Focuses on the Importance of Reading with a
Child
“Read With A Child” encourages every Utahn
to read aloud and tell stories to their children to
help them develop a larger vocabulary, a longer attention
span, better listening skills, and a good reading
foundation.
Under the initiative, Walker also plans to announce
a “book of the month”; initiate a summer
reading program; create community “story buses”;
hold grassroots, community book festivals; and use
the Governor’s Commission on Literacy as her
expert panel on literacy issues and research.
Governor Takes "Read With A Child" on the Road to Five Northern Utah Elementary Schools
With the 2004 Utah Legislative session not even a day into the history books, Gov. Olene Walker plans to promote reading and literacy in northern Utah Thursday, visiting five elementary schools and reading to hundreds of students. Walker plans to visit West Weber, Horace Mann, Freemont, Lincoln and Columbia Elementary schools.
Governor's Forecast Calls For "Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs"
Gov. Walker forecasted a rather strange weather occurrence this morning, calling for "Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs" as her March book of month. Walker announced the book of the month inside the KSL 5 weather studio to a group of school-aged children and read with meteorologist Len Randolph.
Governor Addresses Economic Impact of Early Literacy
In a South Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce meeting today, Gov. Olene Walker addressed members of the business community about the economic benefits of reading with a child on a daily basis and challenged business leaders to become an active part of the literacy solution. The governor also announced her April book of the month entitled Miss Nelson Is Missing!

Walker Announces Transition to Adult Living Program
Walker's
program will provide young people assistance in transitioning
from foster care to adult living through a public/private
network of support in order to promote their success.
Assistance includes assessment, mentoring, self-esteem
building, personal future planning, caregiver and
family networking, education and training in basic
life-skills.

Walker Introduces Self-Help Website “Utah Cares”
Gov.
Olene Walker launched the 24/7 website, “Utah
Cares”, to help families and individuals in
need find services in areas such as food, clothing,
health, childcare and housing. Through an easy to
understand menu of services and questions at www.utahcares.utah.gov,
those seeking assistance can find resources quickly,
and in their local community. As part of the Walker
Work Plan, the website is not only a way of working
smarter through online government, but it also maximizes
human potential.
