Helping people
in need is a priority of the Leavitt Administration. State government
offers programs that make a meaningful difference in people's lives
by increasing the resources available to families in need and helping
people achieve self-reliance.
Governor Leavitt
desires to use the resources of the state to support people with
special needs so they can lead lives that are independent, productive
and fulfilling. Services are available to the elderly, job seekers,
substance abusers, people with disabilities, abused children, young
offenders, the mentally ill and others.
Key initiatives
of Governor Leavitt include:
- Welfare
Reform - The Leavitt Administration reformed the welfare system
in Utah, consolidating multiple programs into a one-stop comprehensive
Department of Workforce Services. Thousands were moved from welfare
rolls to payrolls. Rather than giving people welfare, we are giving
them help.
- Health
Insurance for Children (CHIP) - The Children's Health
Insurance Program is the centerpiece of HealthPrint, a flexible
and market-oriented master plan to incrementally reform health
care in Utah. CHIP provides health insurance for over 17,000 Utah
children
- Health
Insurance for Working Adults (Primary Care Network)
- Olene
Walker Housing Trust Fund - Named after Lt. Governor Olene
Walker, this fund expands home ownership.
- Utah
Foster Care Foundation
- Governor Leavitt and Lt. Governor Walker joined with civic,
church and advocacy groups to form the Utah Child Care Foundation,
which recruits and trains foster parents for neglected and abused
children
