Governor Orders Flags To Be Lowered to Honor Fallen Arizona Firefighters
Jul. 03, 2013
SALT LAKE CITY - Governor Gary R. Herbert has ordered the Flag of the United States of America and the Flag of the State of Utah to be lowered to honor 19 members of the Arizona Granite Mountain Hotshot fire crew who lost their lives fighting wildfires.
Governor Herbert issued the following statement:
On behalf of all Utahns, Jeanette and I offer our heartfelt condolences to the family members and friends of the valiant men who lost their lives fighting the Arizona wildfires. One of Utah's own, Joe Thurston of Cedar City, perished alongside his crew in the act of protecting the lives of others. May we remember these great men with deep respect and honor. During this difficult time of bereavement, our thoughts and prayers are with residents of Arizona and, particularly, with the families and loved ones of the fallen firefighters. I hope they find comfort and peace beyond what mere words are able to provide.
The flags will be flown at half-staff at all state facilities from sunrise to sunset on July 5, 2013.
