Governor Appoints Two New Board of Regents Members

SALT LAKE CITY - Governor Gary R. Herbert has appointed the following individuals for the State Board of Regents: Jesselie B. Anderson, replacing Nolan Karras, and Joyce P. Valdez, replacing Marlon Snow.
"Jesselie and Joyce are joining the Board of Regents at a time when our greatest educational challenges lie before us," said Governor Herbert. "I'm confident their extensive ability and experience will greatly benefit Utah's education system, helping us move toward our economically essential goal of more post-secondary degrees and certifications."

"I am honored and very appreciative to have the opportunity to work with the Board of Regents and the tremendous system of Higher Education that we have in the State," Anderson said.
Anderson has a lifetime of involvement in community service, in everything from educational organizations to arts and hospital boards.
She currently serves on the following boards and organizations: Education First, Legacy of Life Committee (Deseret Foundation); Olene S. Walker Institute of Politics and Public Service (Weber State University); Success in Education Foundation; Waterford School Board of Trustees; Zoo, Arts and Parks Preservation Committee; and a number of councils and boards at the University of Utah.
In addition, Anderson has previously served on the Governor's Mansion Foundation; Natural History Museum of Utah Associates Board; Salt Lake Community College Board of Trustees; The Children's Center Board of Trustees; and Westminster College.
Anderson has also worked with corporate organizations, including Barlow Corporation, Dale Corporation, Service Credit Corporation, and Service Mortgage Corporation. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Utah.
Joyce P. Valdez
"As a native of Utah, I am honored by this appointment from Governor Herbert," Valdez said. "Education is the key to success, and I am happy to help others reach their goals. I am very excited to work with the Board of Regents and make a valuable contribution."
Valdez currently serves on the University of Utah Board of Trustees on which she represents trustees on the Athletic Advisory Committee and the Red Butte Garden Advisory Board. She also spent 17 years employed by Salt Lake Community College, where she worked as an advisor for the Turning Point Program, helping single parents and displaced homemakers to accomplish their educational goals.
Valdez enjoys working with the public and has served on numerous national, state and local boards and committees, including the National Hispanic Senate Task Force Advisory Committee, Utah State Commission for Women and Families, and the Head Start Policy Council. She obtained a degree in Sociology from the University of Utah.
Valdez currently works as the Community Liaison for Mayor Ralph Becker of Salt Lake City.
In addition to these new appointments, the following Board of Regent members have been reappointed by the Governor: Daniel Wayne Campbell, Robert Scott Marquardt, Teresa L. Theurer.
State Board of Regents appointments and reappointments are subject to confirmation by the Utah State Senate.
