SALT LAKE CITY - Following the Vatican's announcement today naming a new pope, Governor Gary R. Herbert issued the following statement:

"I extend my sincerest congratulations to Pope Francis for his election as the new leader of the Catholic Church. I appreciate and respect men and women who commit their lives to serve and uplift others. Pope Benedict promulgated goodness during his papacy and I believe Pope Francis will do the same. Jeanette and I pray that God blesses and strengthens Pope Francis in this important calling."
