Camp Williams, Utah - Utah Senator Orrin G. Hatch has sent a letter to Secretary of Education, Margaret Spellings, asking her to not enforce the McKinney-Vento Act for Hurricane Katrina evacuees.

In his letter, dated Friday, September 8, Hatch wrote, "These displaced and homeless children are not the typical homeless children. Nearly all of them are with their families. It is important to keep families together as the Katrina victims receive aid and support, including education and counseling."

In addition, Hatch wrote "The McKinney-Vento Act prevents school districts from providing formal education to homeless children as a segregated group, which makes sense for a typical homeless-child situation. However, as we discussed, it is counter-productive in this unique situation where these children are homeless but living with their parents."

Students at Camp Williams are currently in extracurricular school activities during the day. Jordan School District officials hope to obtain permission to begin classes on the base soon.
