Governor Launches First Women's College Task Force
Sep. 27, 2011
WHAT: The newly formed Women's College Task Force, a subcommittee of the Governor's Education Excellence Commission, will meet for the first time.
WHO: Governor Gary R. Herbert; Former Governor Olene Walker, co-chair; Jean Beesley, co-chair; 21 task force members
WHEN: Wednesday, September 28, 2:00-3:30 p.m.
WHERE: Capitol Board Room, Utah State Capitol, 2nd floor, east end
BACKGROUND: According to a 2009 Lumina Foundation report, "college-attainment rates are rising in almost every industrialized or post-industrial country in the world, except the U.S." However, Utah is currently below the national average for college completion with only 36% of its young adults receiving college certificates or degrees. As of 2009, women's graduation rates are still more than six percentage points lower than their male counterparts (25.4% for Utah women vs. 31.6% for Utah men) and two percentage points less than their national peers.
The Utah Women's College Task Force aims to change the attitudes of young women and the population in general, and raise the educational aspirations of young women in the state.
