SALT LAKE CITY - Governor Gary R. Herbert has ordered the Flag of the United States of America and the Flag of the State of Utah to be lowered in honor of Information Systems Technician Petty Officer 1st Class (Expeditionary Warfare Specialist/Freefall Parachutist) Jared W. Day. The flags will be flown at half-staff at all state facilities from sunrise to sunset on August 22, 2011.
Petty Officer Day, of Taylorsville, Utah, was killed on August 6, 2011, in Wardack Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He was assigned to an East Coast-based Naval Special Warfare unit.
Governor Herbert has issued the following statement:
"Today, another fallen hero from Utah will be laid to rest. Jeanette and I join with all the citizens of our state in expressing our deepest condolences to the Day family. Petty Officer Day was rightly proud of the specialized service he provided in facilitating and supporting high value missions for the U.S. Navy. We honor his service, his bravery, and his dedication, and express profound gratitude for his having made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our great nation."
