SALT LAKE CITY — Governor Gary R. Herbert issued the following statement regarding the death of Kane County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Harris:

“Once again, we have received the tragic news that a Utah peace officer has lost his life in the line of duty. Kane County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Harris was shot and killed earlier today while pursuing an armed suspect, putting himself in a dangerous situation to protect his community.”

“Deputy Harris’ death comes the same day that South Salt Lake Police Officer Stevan Gerber was shot while serving a warrant on a convicted felon. These two incidents serve as sobering reminders that thousands of Utah men and women put their lives on the line every day to protect ours. We will never forget the sacrifice of Deputy Harris, the service of Officer Gerber, or the many other law enforcement officers who give so much to keep all Utahns safe.”

“Jeanette and I extend our deepest condolences tonight to Deputy Harris’ wife and children, his entire family and friends, and Kane County Sheriff Lamont Smith and members of the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.”
