Lt. Governor Opens Comment Period and Announces Public Meeting

Who: Utah Lt. Governor Gary R. Herbert

What: Utah's Lieutenant Governor will hold an official public meeting to kick off the comment period regarding the selection of new voting equipment for Utah. The equipment is required to bring Utah into federal compliance under the "Help America Vote Act (HAVA)."

When: Thursday, April 21, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Where: First Floor Auditorium of the State Office Building

Why: This public meeting is separate from the "Mock Election," hosted by the Voting Equipment Selection Committee (VESC). The Lt. Governor and the VESC will use the comments to help them decided which election system company to contract with for a purchase. Currently, 23 of Utah's 29 counties use punch card ballots. Emery and San Juan Counties use the optical scan method. Daggett, Piute, Rich, and Wayne counties use paper ballots.

"This will be a great opportunity for the public to express their views on this very important issue," stated Lt. Governor Gary R. Herbert, "I encourage all Utahns to be informed and take part in the process."

Note: Comment will also be accepted in writing at the meeting and via email to GHERBERT@UTAH.GOV for five days, ending at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, April 26, 2005.
