SALT LAKE CITY - Governor Gary R. Herbert has selected civil litigator Keith A. Kelly to serve as a judge in the Third Judicial District.

Kelly has practiced law at Ray Quinney & Nebeker since 1986, and currently serves as the chairman of the firm's Health Care Practice Group.

He has also served as a member of the Utah Supreme Court's Advisory Committee on the Rules of Evidence, and as chairman of the Utah Judicial Council's oversight committee for the Office of the Guardian Ad Litem.

"Keith has an impressive breadth and depth of experience that will serve the State of Utah well," Governor Herbert said. "Keith's knowledge, thoughtfulness and familiarity with the law will make him a fine jurist."

Kelly has a juris doctorate from Stanford Law School, where he was editor of the Stanford Law Review. He also holds bachelor and master's degrees in economics from Brigham Young University.

Kelly will fill the vacancy left by the July 1, 2009, retirement of 3rd District Judge Sheila McCleve. The Third Judicial District serves Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele counties.

The Governor's appointment is subject to confirmation by the Utah Senate.
