Flash flooding is a major problem in Utah, with many narrow slot canyons across the southern portion of the state that are sensitive to rainfall. Issuing warnings for these floods has long been a challenge for National Weather Service forecasters. Since terrain plays such a large part in determining whether an area will experience a flash flood, it is important for forecasters to know if an area of concern is prone to flash flooding.
